Two kinds of Telegram username

A basic username is the one you set inside the app. It is free, it is attached to your account, and it is not an asset you own in any transferable sense.

A collectible username is held on the TON blockchain and traded through Fragment, Telegram official marketplace, which launched on 27 October 2022. Ownership is recorded on chain and can be transferred to another wallet, which is what makes a real market possible.

Buying through Fragment

The mechanics are straightforward. You connect your Telegram account and a TON wallet at fragment.com, fund the wallet with Toncoin, then either bid in an open auction or buy at the listed fixed price. Settlement happens on chain and the username binds to your account afterwards.

The limitation is obvious once you start looking. Fragment can only sell you what somebody has chosen to put up for sale. The handle you actually want is usually not there.

Buying what is not listed

Most desirable Telegram handles are either sitting on an account that has never touched Fragment, or held by an owner who has no intention of listing. Neither case is hopeless, but neither can be solved by refreshing a marketplace.
