The rarest Minecraft capesranked by supply
Rarity is not a feeling, it is a number. The only question that matters is how many accounts could ever have been given one, and for most capes that number is fixed forever.
Tier one: the single account capes
A handful of capes were awarded to exactly one person. The millionth customer cape, the dB cape, the snowman cape, the turtle cape and the birthday cape all exist on individual accounts and were never issued again.
These are the rarest capes in the game by a wide margin. They are also effectively off market, because the accounts holding them are rarely for sale at any price.
Tier two: staff and contributor capes
Mojang capes, the Mojang Studios cape and the Mojira moderator cape were never available to the public. Neither were the translator capes, the Realms map maker cape or the competition capes from Scrolls and Cobalt.
Supply here is tied to how many people did a specific job at a specific time, which is typically dozens rather than thousands. Staff capes in particular are issued to employees and cannot be bought.
Tier three: the MINECON capes
The five event capes are the rarest capes a member of the public could obtain, and their supply is capped by ticket sales.
- MINECON 2011, roughly 4,500 attendees.
- MINECON 2012, roughly 4,500 attendees.
- MINECON 2013, 7,500 tickets sold.
- MINECON 2015, 10,000 tickets.
- MINECON 2016, 12,000 passes.
Tier four: the window capes
The Migrator cape went to every Java player who moved to a Microsoft account. The Vanilla cape went to everyone owning both editions. The 15th anniversary cape went to everyone who turned up for the celebration.
Supply runs into the millions, so none of these are rare in the strict sense. What they are is closed. The window shut, and no new account can qualify, which is a different kind of scarcity and one that grows over time as accounts are abandoned.
Why attrition matters as much as supply
A cape issued to 4,500 accounts in 2011 does not mean 4,500 accounts carry it today. Fifteen years of forgotten passwords, abandoned emails, failed migrations and deleted accounts have quietly reduced that pool, and nobody publishes the figure.
This is why the oldest capes keep appreciating even though their original supply never changes. The denominator only ever shrinks.
Questions people ask
- What is the single rarest cape?
- One of the personal one off awards, each of which exists on a single account. Among capes the public could get, the MINECON 2011 cape is the scarcest.
- Is the Migrator cape rare?
- No. Millions of accounts have it. It is retired, which is not the same thing as rare.
- Can I buy a rare cape?
- Not the cape by itself. Capes cannot be transferred between accounts, so the only route is acquiring the account that holds one.
