Minecraft usernameshistory and rarity
Minecraft name rules have quietly created one of the strangest username markets online, including a category of handles that can never be registered again by anyone.
The rules
- Usernames are 3 to 16 characters, with the exception of early accounts that registered shorter ones before the limit existed.
- You can change your name no more than once every 30 days.
- When you change it, your old name is held for 37 days before anybody else can claim it.
- A name under 3 characters, once given up, can never be obtained again. The same applies to names made of symbols.
Why February 2015 matters
Name changes did not exist until February 2015. Before that, the name you registered was the name you had, permanently.
That single update created the entire secondary market. Names could now be released, which meant they could be targeted, timed and claimed. It also meant a name could be moved from one account to another by releasing and reclaiming, which is where sniping comes from.
The 37 day window
The gap between releasing a name and it becoming publicly available is the most consequential number in the whole system. It is long enough to be predictable, which means desirable names are tracked, queued and claimed within milliseconds of becoming free.
This is why "the name is available next month" is rarely good news. Anything worth having is already being watched by automated tooling.
The extinct category
One and two character names exist on accounts registered before the three character minimum. If one of those accounts ever changes its name, the old name is gone permanently, not released back into the pool.
That makes short Minecraft names unlike almost any other digital asset. Supply does not just stop growing, it actively shrinks, and each disappearance is irreversible.
Questions people ask
- Can I get a one or two letter Minecraft name?
- Only by acquiring an account that already holds one. They cannot be registered, and if released they disappear rather than becoming available.
- How long until a name becomes free?
- 37 days after the holder changes it.
- How often can I change my name?
- Once every 30 days.
- Does migrating to a Microsoft account change my name?
- No. The username travels with the account.
