Transferring a Telegram usernamewallet to wallet

A collectible moves like any other asset on TON: out of one wallet and into another. A basic username does not move at all, and that difference is where people lose handles.

Moving a collectible

A collectible you own can be transferred to another wallet for free, beyond ordinary network costs. Wallet apps such as Tonkeeper expose it under their NFT section, and the transfer is a normal on chain send.

Once it lands in the new wallet it belongs to that holder, with the ownership record updated publicly. There is no approval step and no intermediary.

Putting it to work on an account

Owning the handle and using the handle are two separate actions. In My Assets on Fragment you choose Assign to Telegram, pick the profile, group or channel, and then activate it in Telegram settings.

You can reassign it later, or detach it and leave it sitting in the wallet.

Why a basic username cannot be handed over

There is no transfer function for a basic username. The only way to pass one to somebody is for you to release it and for them to claim it, and the gap between those two actions is public.

Anybody monitoring the handle can take it in that window, and neither of you has any recourse. If a buyer asks you to do this, they are either inexperienced or counting on you being inexperienced.

  1. Convert the handle to a collectible first, for a one time 5 TON fee.
  2. Then transfer it on chain, where the move is atomic and verifiable.
  3. Never release a handle on the promise that the other side will pay afterwards.

Questions people ask

Does transferring cost anything?
The transfer itself is free apart from TON network fees. Fragment 5% applies to sales, not to moving your own asset.
Can I transfer to someone without a wallet?
They need a TON wallet to receive it. There is no email or username based handover.
What if I sell outside Fragment?
The transfer still happens on chain. What changes is that nothing holds the payment, which is exactly the gap a broker closes.
